Excellent point, Robert. And sometimes it can work the other way too: I fully intended to upgrade the pickups of my RG550 20th Anniversary reissue, but when the guitar arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the stock pickups, so I kept them, thereby saving hundreds of dollars.

“I imagine a lot of players will swap the pickups as soon as they get the guitar, which is exactly what many have done with the budget-priced OLP Petrucci model.”

Even better, though, is that someone who can’t afford that all at once can upgrade in stages as their budget allows. More guitars that are less expensive and easily upgradable are a great thing in my estimation.
