Aljon! Great guy. Great guitar too. However, I imagine if something went wrong with it, you wouldn't be able to bring it to just any luthier.

I recently spent about an hour playing with one of these in my shop, and I have to say, this is anything but intuitive. I followed the quick start instructions to the letter, and only got it to change tunings once. this thing is not just complicated, it's actually a huge pain in the ass.

sure, it's a huge step up from the original robots. but that's not saying much. and considering the massive increase in the amount of available tones/tunings, I really think they should've added another MCK. I don't feel like it'd be asking too much to have a second MCK for controlling the chameleon tones.

And although it sounds good, there is still one fundamental issue. While the tuners move just fine, the saddles don't. While this sounds more in tune than the first generation of robots, it's still tough to play in higher positions.

so I guess my verdict is that while this guitar represents a huge step forwards in guitar technology, it's still too undeveloped to just pick up and play. if you're willing to invest the time, it has great potential. but this potential still hasn't been fully realized. give it more time, and Gibson will make something great out of this. At this point in time, considering the price, I'd say it's not worth it.

(also, as an aside, the fret edges were rough and crude. typical gibson.)

I just got mine August 09 after placing a deposit on one in Nov 08. The ones originally released had problems. Gibson stopped delivering them to fix the problems.

To me it was worth the wait. Unlike most Gibsons, the workmanship is perfect. I have not found a single flaw, and I have scrutinized it.

There is no hum or noise. Everything works as advertised. The ability to change the sound of the guitar is limited only by my imagination. The sustain is better than any other guitar I own, including 2 Gibsons. The PLEK'd neck has an incredibly low action and no buzz.

I have not got around to using the RIP yet, I am enjoying the guitar too much just plugged into my amp to mess with setting that up yet.

I absolutely love it, and for the asking price, think it is a much better buy than a Les Paul Standard.

The DarkFire is pricey, but it has several genuine innovations. I think I'll have to save up for one.

Thanks, I didn't mean to imply Gibson designed it, just that they use it. I'll amend the article to clarify this.

"The frets are shaped with Gibson’s PLEK system"

Its not Gibson's PLEK.. its PLEK's PLEK. Gibson just uses the equipment like Suhr, G&L and many others...
