1. I almost got into a fight with Kerry King. It was at a record company party for Machine Head, who Slayer were touring with at the time. I met Kerry at the buffet and the first thing I said was “Dude, I used to play ‘Dead Skin Mask’ in my band in high school.” He said “Yeah, I bet you didn’t play it right though.” I said “Um, I could show you how to play it, mate.” As these words left my lips, my whole life flashed before my eyes. I was mortified. Somehow I made it out alive.
2. I once recorded a shred cover of ‘Hey Mickey.’ Listen!
3. I’ve had an uncommonly large number of things fall on my head, mainly during childhood, the worst of which was a wooden ‘Anzac Avenue’ sign my dad made for my school.
4. Though I tell people I started my journalism career at age 18 writing for BMA Magazine, Canberra in early 1997, the truth is that my first published work was a poem about a fictional fishing competition, which was printed in the Bermagui Big Game Anglers Club newsletter about 10 years before that.
5. I started my music career by singing to the next-door neighbours’ duck, Waddle, over the fence. Waddle was a very attentive listener until a dog made him into dinner.
6. I can’t whistle.
7. I made my first electric guitar by stuffing a cheap microphone into my acoustic guitar, and blu-tacking backgammon pieces to the front to look like volume and tone controls. I was 7.
I’m tagging Japan Guitar Journies, Six String Lounge, My Life With Guitar, Axebay Used Guitar Blog, Tonepedia, Kuztunes and Tonefreq.

I write for
I'm 27 and couldn't whistle either, until about 2 years ago. I was overseas with my brother, walking around Machu Piccu and decided I needed to learn to whistle… I just started blowing, trying my cheeks with different amounts of air and my toungue in different positions. Sure I'd tried before, but this time I didn't give up after 2 mins. Eventually I got it. I'm still not the best whistler, but I can get a semblance of a tune out. I dunno if it'll work for you, but initially I had better luck if my cheeks had a small amount of air in them… Keep trying and you'll get it eventually.
