R.Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection

I’m a sucker for books about music – biographies, compendiums, tablature books, books of amp schematics, etc etc etc. Perhaps some day I’ll write a post about my favourite music books like The Inner Game of Music and Zen Guitar and Aspen Pittman’s The Tube Amp Book and Guitar Effects Pedals – the Practical Handbook Book and CREEM: America’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll Magazine and Night Beat: A Shadow History of Rock and Roll and, above all, the Lester Bangs anthology Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung. Well I’m going to go to my study and make sure there’s shelf space for R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection. I’ve been a fan of Crumb’s work since just about forever and I love how into music he is. Check out the Amazon.com blurb about the book:

Robert Crumb first began drawing record covers in 1968 when Janis Joplin, a fellow Haight Ashbury denizen, asked him to provide a cover for her albumCheap Thrills. It was an invitation the budding artist couldn’t resist, especially since he had been fascinated with record covers-particularly for the legendary jazz, country, and old-time blues music of the 1920s and 1930s-since he was a teen. This early collaboration proved so successful that Crumb went on to draw hundreds of record covers for both new artists and largely forgotten masters. So remarkable were Crumb’s artistic interpretations of these old 78 rpm singles that the art itself proved influential in their rediscovery in the 1960s and 1970s. Including such classics as Truckin’ My Blues Away, Harmonica Blues, and Please Warm My Weiner, Crumb’s opus also features more recent covers done for CDs. R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection is a must-have for any lover of graphics and old-time music. 450 four-color illustrations

Some old-school Gibson M-III ads

The Gibson M-III is one of my favourite discontinued guitar designs, and if ever there was a guitar that was screaming to be made into a 7-string version, it’d be this. I wrote an article for Gibson.com about it a while back (which you can read here) but I thought you might like to see these old 1991 ads from Guitar World, which I recently unearthed at the same time that I found those cool old Yamaha ads. Enjoy!
