Well, I for one am surprised that the first signature axe of Mastodon’s Bill Kelliher isn’t a Silverburst Les Paul, but this is kinda better because it’s its own thing: the Gibson Bill Kelliher Golden Axe Explorer. Bill has loaded this baby up with all sorts of unique elements: LACE Nitro Hemi humbuckers, gold-plated hardware, a hot-stamped Golden Axe truss-rod cover, cream pickguard with hot-stamped Mastodon logo, cream binding, and Bill’s choice of Go-Gold Burst finish in high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. Wanna buy one? Here it is at Musicians Friend. The body is unchambered mahogany, and the solid mahogany neck is carved to Bill’s preference of slim Explorer profile measuring 0.800” at the 1st fret and 0.850” at the 12th. The fretboard is solid rosewood with 22 medium-jumbo frets and a PLEK-cut Corian nut.
The LACE Nitro Hemi humbuckers are wired for coil-splitting, each with their own dedicated push-pull pot so you can combine humbucker and single coil tones. Lace says the Nitro Hemi is designed to go “from zero to metal in a heartbeat. This Nitro Hemi is a high output pickup with a thump of a fat humbucker and sparkly bell like top end. Harmonics jump off every note for increased depth and detail.” The neck model has a resistance of 15.8k, and the bridge version is 19.0k.
