Chic Featuring Nile Rodgers

NileNile Rodgers is one of the most important guitarists ever. Guitar as we know it just wouldn’t be the same without the influence of his soulful, funky rhythm playing, nor would music in general sound the way it does without the influence of his production on albums such as David Bowie’s Let’s Dance. Nile has a huge discography, and some of it has been funnelled into the compilation Nile Rodgers Presents The Chic Organization – Up All Night (The Greatest Hits). It covers plenty of classics by Chic, Sister Sledge and many more. And if you’d like to check out some great Nile-related music outisde of this compilation, might I suggest Family Style by the Vaughan Brothers, Cosmic Thing by The B-52’s, Your Filthy Little Mouth by David Lee Roth, and Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories (which features Nile on three tracks including Get Lucky). Nile has been talking a lot on Twitter lately about a forthcoming official Fender replica of his famous ‘Hitmaker’ Stratocaster, so I can’t wait to check that thing out!  Read More …

PERRI INK. Custom Guitars “Memento”

mementoI always love hearing of guitar makers incorporating non-guitarry influences in their work. Whether it’s an art style like Art Deco or Art Nouveau, a movement like Steampunk or a minimalist aesthetic Steinberger-style, it’s always great to see someone looking outside of the accepted sphere of guitar inspirations when it comes time to kit out that collection of wire and wood. PERRI INK. Custom Guitars’ latest is the Memento, which is inspired by the Christopher Nolan movie of the same name. And in true PERRI INK. Custom Guitars style, the model is being launched with some rather tasty-looking pics. Press release and plenty of photos below: Read More …

INTERVIEW: Asking Alexandria’s Ben Bruce

Asking Alexanrdia2012 was a breakout year for Asking Alexandria, headlining massive sold-out European and North American tours, and capping it all off with a slot on the Rockstar Mayhem Festival. This year they’ve packed in a stack of European festival appearances as well as a huge, huge show at the Download festival. And now they’ve released From Death To Destiny, their third album. Produced by Joey Sturgis (The Devil Wears Prada, Buried in Verona, Of Mice and Men), From Death To Destiny is heavy, melodic, intense and powerful. And it’s full of the twin-guitar attack of Ben Bruce and Cameron Liddell, both of whom are die-hard Ibanez guys with their own signature models. I reached out to Bruce because I thought it’d be fun to have a nice nerdly chat about all things six-string.

I hope you don’t mind talking guitar-nerd stuff!

I’ll try my best! My guitar techs know more about guitar stuff than I do!  Read More …

Fretlight Certified Teacher Program

fretlightAs someone who writes instructional columns (you can read Unleash Your Inner Rock God in Mixdown magazine every month), I’m all for learning from magazines, websites and YouTube. But if that’s your only method of learning, it could take you years to catch up to things you would learn very early on with a teacher. Fretlight, who have long offered innovative illuminated-fretboard guitars for learning purposes, are now bringing teachers right into the equation with their new Certified Teacher Program and Learning Center, which connects students and teachers and lets the student see the teacher’s fretting illuminated on their own guitar. This is a really great idea which I can see helping a lot of players to really optimise their learning time. Here’s the press release: Read More …
