Unleashing The Acoustic Within Your Electric

acousticpicSome of us start out on acoustic guitar before ‘graduating’ to electric. Some of us stay on acoustic our whole lives. Some of us are electric shredders who don’t require an acoustic guitar often enough to actually plonk down enough cash to own one, but we might need the sound of an acoustic on our tracks from time to time. This post is for them. So, what do you do if you want to lay down some acoustic guitar on a track you’re recording, but you don’t have one at hand? Technology to the rescue! There are few tricks you can use to conjure up the spirit, if not the sound, of an acoustic guitar.

gbenttsfnh3-xl-02Earlier this year Epiphone launched the Limited Edition Tommy Thayer “Spaceman” Les Paul Standard Outfit, a very cool silver flake Les Paul kitted out to Tommy’s specs and sporting a pair of Gibson USA Gibson 498T humbuckers and sporting some cool bonus stuff as well. These guitars have now sold out (Allans Music have one listed as in stock if you’d like to try your luck) and now were left with the question “What next?” At the end of the press release below, Epiphone states “Visit Epiphone.com for more news on Epiphone, Tommy Thayer, and possible future runs of the Ltd. Ed. Tommy Thayer “Spaceman” Les Paul Standard Outfit.” If there are future runs, I think it’d be great to see new designs based on some of the other guitars Tommy uses live with KISS. COOL GEAR ALERT: The Distillery By Tone Concepts

The-Distillery4-850x1024If there’s something I hear from artists during interviews over and over again, it’s that they’re usually a little bummed out that when they have to tour here in Australia they don’t always get to use their own rigs. They’re often saddled with rented backlines, even for big headlining tours. The Distillery by ToneConcepts is in part an attempt to address this problem, with plenty of clean boost power as well as a sophisticated tone-shaping circuit designed to get more out of your pickups, whether you need your single coils to be fatter or your humbuckers to be punchier. Check out Premier Guitar’s review with sound clips here. And here’s the press release: Read More …

REVIEW: Mayones Regius 6

Regius 6Poland’s Mayones has been around for quite a while, but they’ve only recently really gained a foothold on the world stage, helped in large part by the high visibility of players such as Periphery’s Misha Mansoor and Pain of Salvation’s Daniel Gildenlöw. There are several base models to choose from in the Mayones range, including six and seven-string variations, your choice of pickups by DiMarzio, Bare Knuckle, EMG and Seymour Duncan, and even the Djentlemen range of 7 and 8-string axes aimed at the the rapidly solidifying dent movement. The Regius is a particularly popular shape for Mayones, a little more offset and rounded compared to the equally droolworthy Setius.

INTERVIEW: Limp Bizkit’s Wes Borland

Limp Bizkit imageLimp Bizkit are stayers, alright? They’ve had their ups and downs, their band member comings and goings, and they’ve ridden out a particularly intense backlash against the genre they helped to define – nu metal – maintaining their attitude and sense of humour along the way. A triumphant Australian return at Soundwave 2012 helped solidify their place within the current metal landscape, and they’re back to do it again this month with a series of headline shows in Australia. “It was redeeming,” guitarist Wes Borland says of the band’s last Australian visit. “And it kind of felt like us resurrecting ourselves, in a way, with what had happened at the Big Day Out, with the young girl’s death, as well as Australia and us.” The sense of sadness in Borland’s voice as he speaks of the tragic 2001 death of Big Day Out concertgoer Jessica Michalik is palpable. “When I think about the two combined, Australia has always been tied to grief in the past, and it was nice to kind of obliterate that and meet Jessica’s family, meet the friends that had been there at the show with her when she died, and in some ways the whole thing has come full circle for us to forgive ourselves and make new memories and have the air cleared. And now this’ll be our first headlining tour of Australia that is not linked to a festival, so it’s nice to kind of hit the reset button, in a way.”  Read More …
