NAMM: Schecter Custom Shop 9-string

Oh hey, Schecter Custom Shop 9-string that almost escaped my attention in amongst all the incredible 8-strings Schecter has on display this year! Usually it’s a safe bet that if a company goes to the trouble of tooling up to make something like this, it ain’t gonna just be a one-off. Let’s hope something like this filters into Schecter’s regular line sooner or later. Oh, wait, yep! Check out the Hellraiser C-9!

NAMM: Fender American Deluxe Strat Plus

stratplus1

One of the coolest things from NAMM has got to be Fender’s new American Deluxe Strat Plus. Not just any Deluxe – this one features interchangeable ‘mod’ cards which let you perform modifications such as the ability to blend the neck pickup in with the bridge or middle, or different treble bleed values, or separate bass and treble rolloff controls in place of the regular tone controls. There are HSS and SSS versions, and although each of the current cards are passive, there’s space in the card slot for a 9v battery, which means there’s plenty of scope for future cards to add things like Clapton-style mid boosts and other fun stuff.  Read More …

NAMM: EVH Gear Booth Visit

IMG_2387There’s a very particular feeling I get whenever I check out the EVH section at Fender’s room at NAMM. It’s a feeling that Eddie Van Halen (and the folks working with him like Chip Ellis, Matt Bruck and Fender) have so much experience, knowledge and creativity when it comes to guitars and amps that your tone is in the best possible hands. And that’s something that’s apparent whether you’re plugging into an EVH 5150III amp, picking up one of the EVH Striped models that made their second showing this year, or one of the much pricier EVH Wolfgang Custom Relic USA models. Here’s a look at the EVH booth at NAMM. Read More …

NAMM: New Taylor T5z Hybrid Acoustic/Electric

taylort5z2Aah, I love me a good Taylor – which is pretty easy to do since they’re all good. One of my favourite things at NAMM this year has been the Taylor T5z, a new shrunken-down version of the beautiful T5, the revolutionary hybrid acoustic/electric guitar. The T5z is tweaked a little in the playability side of things too, with bigger frets and a more electric-like 12 inch fretboard radius. Here’s more info from Taylor:

PRESS RELEASE: ANAHEIM, Calif. – January 24, 2014 – Taylor Guitars is expanding its groundbreaking electric/acoustic hollowbody T5 Series with a sleek new sibling, the compact T5z. Like the original T5, the T5z boasts incredible tonal versatility, enabling players to shift from pristine acoustic to growling electric with the flip of a five-way switch. The difference is a scaled-down body size and a fretting experience that will feel familiar to electric players. Read More …
