COOL GEAR ALERT: DigiTech Whammy V

Here’s something incredibly interesting that I just saw on the excellent Effects Database: the latest DigiTech Whammy V Pedal. And get this: it’s finally operated by a 9V DC adaptor (rather than AC). That feature alone is bound to sway some on-the-fencers, but the Whammy V also offers True Bypass (a popular aftermarket mod) and a new chordal shifting mode.

Here’s the press release.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – HARMAN’s DigiTech today introduced its next-generation Whammy pedal, building upon one of the most iconic guitar pedals recognized by guitarists around the world. The new Whammy features the classic Whammy sound that guitarists have embraced for over 20 years, and moves to the next level by introducing chordal Whammy pitch-shifting, additional Whammy intervals, and true bypass.

For over two decades the Whammy pedal has been known as the ultimate pitch-shifting pedal in the world, used by everyone from Jimmy Page to Tom Morello and heard on songs like “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes and the Black Keys’ recent hit, “Lonely Boy.” The introduction of new possibilities with the Whammy pedal reinforces its legendary status of the pitch-shifting realm.

COOL GEAR ALERT: Line 6 StageSource L3t

I just received a press release from Line 6 about their new StageSource L3t powered loudspeaker, which is now shipping. At first glance this looks like a great PA-type speaker – and I’m sure it is – but it also offers some very interesting applications for the guitarist. It can serve as an acoustic guitar amp, which is handy, but it can also be used with Line 6 POD gear as a speaker system. So if you’re really attached to your ‘in the box’ POD settings and would like to use them onstage without running through a conventional amp, pair your POD with one of these and you’re ready to go.

Line 6 Ships StageSource L3t, the World’s Most Versatile High-powered Loudspeaker for Musicians

– Now available, StageSource L3t combines multi-function design with Smart Speaker modes, integrated mixer and digital networking for the widest variety of live sound applications –

CALABASAS, Calif. – April 10, 2012 – Line 6, Inc. proudly announces the availability of StageSource™ L3t. StageSource loudspeaker systems are built on a powerful new technology platform that enables a single enclosure to provide best-of-class performance in multiple live sound functions.

Using six innovative Smart Speaker modes, the L3t optimizes its output for a variety of performance scenarios: front-of-house PA, floor monitor, personal PA, keyboard and acoustic guitar backline or with Line 6 POD® multi-effect processors as a high-performance electric guitar speaker system. Smart Speaker modes can be set manually or automatically via built-in orientation sensors that detect whether the speaker has been pole-mounted or rotated and tilted for use as a monitor.

COOL GEAR ALERT: Vintage and Laka by Vintage ukuleles

The ukulele really is the ultimate instrument. Stripped of pretence, it’s like pure music distilled down to its essence and sent drifting out on a wave. It’s a deceptive little instrument: non-musicians often feel comfortable picking it up because “it’s just a ukulele,” only to realise with a jolt a few months later that they’re actually making music now. Vintage has just introduced four gorgeous new ukes that feature familiar outlines and some very player-friendly features which are sure to give the mighty uke the rock cred it so richly deserves. Check them out!

COOL GEAR ALERT: ADA APP-1 preamp

A/DA relaunched a few years ago (in fact, that was one of the first ever news items on I Heart Guitar) with a brilliant reissue of their classic flanger. The company was already highly respected for their flangers and phasers when they released the classic MP-1 tube preamp, and I’ve been waiting to see the latest on their next big preamp statement Well, here it is! The APP-1 Pedal Preamp is now ready to go. This sounds like an incredible piece of kit. It’s designed to be extremely reactive to the input signal, which sounds like a very good thing to me – I’m kinda tired of everyone using the same ultra-compressed, ultra-distorted tone at the expense of good old fashioned playing dynamics, and the APP-1 goes out of its way to take your tone to expressive new dimensions.

What’s it sound like? Well check out this batch of demos, particularly the second one, where you’ll hear how the APP-1 goes from sparkly clean to roaring overdrive simply with harder pick attack. Y’know, just how it’s meant to be.

Here’s the press release:

A/DA Launches New APP-1 PEDAL PREAMP With Groundbreaking D-TORSION CORETM Technology

WALNUT CREEK, CA – MARCH 20, 2012 — A/DA announces the release of the new APP-1 Pedal Preamp, a guitar preamplifier built around A/DA’s new patent-pending player-responsive D-TORTION CORE technology, which reacts to the signal level of the strings to deliver more volume, dynamics, timbre, faster transients and richer harmonics than any amplifier available today.  The APP-1 is A/DA’s first product based on the newly invented D TORSION CORE technology, which features user-adjustable dynamic range and threshold levels for signal limiting, compression, distortion and harmonic expansion.  The APP-1 allows the guitarist to express, through his or her fingers, dynamics and tone like never before, going from ultraclean to overdrive to heavy distortion without turning a single knob on any amp, signal processor, recording console, stomp box or guitar.

New pedals from Dwarfcraft

Check out these new goodies from Dwarfcraft. First up is the Zhago, a lean boost with a toggle to introduce a tight, gritty distortion with a strong gate.

Here’s a demo video:

Then there’s the Total Spack Vibes, created for Daniel Spack, member of Collections Of Colonies Of Bees, Volcano Choir, and Group of the Altos. It’s a weaponized overdrive began as a tricked-out version of Dwarfcraft’s popular “The Internet” overdrive pedal, but with an added tone knob and a gain control for the foot switchable gain boost, labeled “harder.” Sounds cool on paper, but according to Dwarfcraft’s Ben and Louise, “HOLY MOLEY. When it came together and hit the testing table, it’s true nature was revealed. EVIL. True, you can get familiar overdrive sounds, and a handy dandy boost, just like you would with The Internet. But in addition to these, you can conjure up a plethora of scratchy harsh treble blasting noise distortion.”

COOL GEAR ALERT: Roger Mayer Vibe TC

One of my favourite pedals ever is the Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe. It’s one of those pedals that has the uncanny ability to simply make everything sound better, and once you turn it on it’s hard to turn it off. Well the latest evolution of the Voodoo Vibe is the new Vibe TC, and it’s a very stylish little unit too. The press release is below, and make sure you check out Roger’s website and Facebook page.
