Mark Holcomb Rocking BIAS And JamUp

Screen_Shot_2014_03_11_at_11.30.42_AMb6acfeCheck out this killer video of Periphery’s Mark Holcomb jamming through some riffs using a custom amp in Positive Grid’s BIAS app and running through several features in JamUp. The song list is “Pale Aura,” an untitled demo which may or may not be used for Periphery, and “Immaterial.” “Since I keep my Fractal AxeFx-II racked up in our touring rig when we’re at home, my home jamming rig has been condensed to just an iPad and a powered cab,” Mark says. “Not only are the tones as good as any other piece of gear I own but the portability of having both Positive Grid apps on iOS makes it ideal for travel.”

COOL APP ALERT: Coach Guitar

screen480x480-1

If there’s one thing I learned when I was teaching guitar, it was that everybody learns differently. I had some students who needed to see things written down before they could internalise it. I had some who couldn’t get a grasp on tablature, and others who couldn’t quite tell the difference between a quarter note and an eighth note on the page. But interestingly, I found that some of the students who really took off with their playing were the ones who were able to turn off the ‘numbers and notes’ side of playing and to instead focus on the patterns, shapes, lines and contours created by the notes on the fretboard. That seems to be the same approach taken by the iPhone and iPad app Coach Guitar, which strips guitar down to its most basic element of ‘put your finger here and play the notes in time.’ You can check the app out here for free, and get four free guitar lessons (“Stairway To Heaven,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Beat It” and “Stand By Me.” Read More …

LiveTunes: Is That An Arena In Your Pocket?

LiveTunesAn app that adds crowd noise and reverb to studio recordings? On the surface that sounds to me like kinda a gimmick. And I guess it is. But at the same time, it also sounds kinda fun! Not gonna lie, sometimes I’d like to hear an arena crowd screaming and cheering in response to my music, but unless I crowdsource the funds to pay a crowd, that probably ain’t gonna happen. So at least I can load my tracks into the new app LiveTunes, drink way too much wine and gaze mournfully at the rain through the window as I dream of what could have been, had I somehow managed to spearhead an arena-instrumental-rock revival. Anyway, here’s the press release! Read More …

TC Electronic TonePrint app comes to Android

Great news for Android owners! The TC Electronic TonePrint app is now available for you too! I’ve been using this on iOS with my Hall Of Fame Reverb pedal (review soon!) and it’s an amazing innovation.

Here’s the press release.

TC Electronic’s Revolutionary TonePrint App Now Available for Android

A few months ago TC Electronic launched its truly mind-blowing TonePrint® App for iPhone. Now the magic has been successfully ported for Android devices!

(Risskov, Denmark, 13 January 2012) The new app compiles all TonePrints for TC Electronic’s TonePrint enabled guitar pedals in one place and allows users to ‘beam’ new TonePrints to their pedals in a matter of seconds. The idea behind the technology is as simple as it is ingenious: Each TonePrint has been converted to a unique-sounding magnetic impulse that can be beamed via the phone’s internal speaker, through the pickup of a guitar and directly to a TonePrint pedal! The sound does not carry any data so it doesn’t matter if users are in a raucous arena or a library – no other sounds will interfere with the data being sent from the phone.
