NAMM: Charvel Booth Visit

IMG_2397One of my favourite things about NAMM this year was that Charvel was up in the Fender room, where it belongs, instead of downstairs tucked away into a weird little area that was hard to see until you were inside it like last year. This meant it was much easier to see beautiful new instruments like the Guthrie Govan, Joe Duplantier and Jake E Lee signature models as well as plenty of beautiful Charvel Custom Shop creations and of course the San Dimas Style 1 that will never, ever stop being awesome. Join us as we take a peek, won’t you? Read More …

BetH6nJCEAAnf_BPRESS RELEASE: Charvel is proud to announce three new signature models, the JEL Signature Pearl White model, Guthrie Govan Signature models and Joe Duplantier Signature San Dimas Style 2. For decades now, the most requested Charvel guitar ever is a Jake E. Lee signature model based on the distinctive white “Charvel-ized” instrument the great guitarist has played ever since he bought it new back in 1975. With this special guitar, from his first notable successes in the early 1980s through an acclaimed career that continues today with Red Dragon Cartel, Lee remains an admired and influential musician’s musician. Take A Tour Of Guthrie Govan’s Pedalboard

GuthrieGuitarist – the excellent UK magazine that you really should subscribe to if you’re not already – has just posted a great pedalboard walk-through with Guthrie Govan, which you can watch below. This is Part 1 of a 3-part video. Guthrie’s using his Charvel guitar – which he says is close to becoming a production model – and his new Victory Amplification V100 Duke amp. Guitarist says “Stay tuned for a full demo of the Victory V100 from Guthrie and an in-depth look at the retro-style Floyd Rose vibrato on his new Charvel.” Issue 374 of Guitarist magazine features a  Guthrie Govan cover feature in which he talks about his future plans with Charvel, technique and new musical horizons. It’s out in print and digital forms from 18 October 2013. In the meantime, here’s the pedalboard walk-through: Read More …

INTERVIEW: Jeff Sahyoun of letlive.

tumblr_mjd2umUUEl1qm4awso1_500It seems that when I ask anyone what will be remembered amongst the strongest releases of 2013 lately, they immediately elect the new letlive. album The Blackest Beautiful [Epitaph]. Out July 5 here in Australia and July 9 elsewhere, it’s a passionate, powerful, energetic burst of post-Rage-Against-The-Machine angst and ferocity, with a huge organic sound and a world-class approach to subtle but crucial vocal harmony. It’s also brain-grabbingly memorable, despite its complexity. Guitarist Jeff Sahyoun – who also engineered the album – has developed an idiosyncratic style which blends traditional riff-rock with post-hardcore adrenaline and a sound-designer’s appreciation of using found objects for weird noises and textures. Currently on the Warped tour throughout the US, I caught up with Sahyoun while he kicked back in a carpark in the middle of nowhere.  Read More …

Aristocrats DVD, plus Guthrie talks Charvel

The Aristocrats – Bryan Beller, Guthrie Govan and Marco Minnemann – are preparing to release their very first live CD and DVD, BOING, We’ll Do It Live!, just in time to awesomize the holidaysfor musicians everywhere. And get this: the 5.1 surround audio mix was done by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree!

I was lucky enough to catch the Aristocrats’ very first gig back before they even had a name, and I can’t wait to crank the new DVD up to neighbour-enraging levels at home. There’s more info about the DVD below, but before we get to that, Guthrie has shared a few words on the custom Charvel he’s been seen playing recently.

He says:

“Hello! Guthrie here, with a somewhat boring (but apparently necessary!) update… and a pretty picture ;-)

Well… the guitar I’ve been using lately has apparently caused something of a stir in certain sectors of the online community, so I figured it might be helpful if I explained what’s actually going on. Read More …

NAMM 2012: More on the Charvel 7-strings – and another one!

Okay, so the other day I posted some pics of a pair of Charvel 7-strings at NAMM, and a lot of people want to know more about them. Here’s the score.

These two (and another one you can see above) are Charvel Custom Shop one-offs for the NAMM show. They’re not for sale. While I was checking them out, a Charvel fan tried very very hard to convince the Charvel guys to let him buy one but they wouldn’t bite. There are no current plans to make a production version of these, and if you would like to order one from the Custom Shop you are very welcome to do so, however the waiting list is currently at about two years.

So here are some more pics of the two I originally posted about:
