INTERVIEW: Devin Townsend

Devin Townsend Project

Transcendence is the latest album from the Devin Townsend Project and in many ways it feels like a culmination of musical explorations that Devin begun in 2009 with Addicted! and that flowed through Epicloud and Sky Blue. It’s alternatingly melodic and crushing, ethereal and imposing, and in true Devin fashion it’s an album that reveals more about itself on each subsequent listen.

I love the new record. Y’know how every now and then an album comes along that’s just what you needed to hear at that point in time?

That’s awesome. Thank you, Peter. It’s a special one for me in a lot of ways, and especially the latter half. The processes that went into it and the challenges that came into it, the control issues, letting go of things and trying to participate with other people and be analytical and aware enough of myself that I could call myself on my own shit is one thing. But it also coincided with what feels like a real tangible shift in my own psyche. Now, whether or not that was because of the fact that I took myself on vacation for the first time in my life, or something to do with age, or something to do with circumstances I’m not sure. But something shifted at the same time as the latter half of this record and now I find myself in a place that is new and foreign in a lot of ways and it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. Mooer Devin Townsend Ocean Machine Pedal

Mooer Devin Townsend Ocean Machine

Mooer has just unveiled the Devin Townsend Ocean Machine signature reverb/delay/looper pedal. Below is a little demo posted by Bart from Effects Database, recorded at Musikmesse on the weekend. There are two delays (one has digital delay, echo, galaxy, rotary, tri-mod, liquid, tremolo, reverse and mod-inverse, modes while the other has digital, real, analog, tape, mod, lofi, tube, dyna and filler modes – or does it say ‘filter’? Trying to squint here!). The reverb types include room, hall, plate, phaser-verb, flanger-verb, filter, reverse, spring and mod. There’s also a Shimmer control for octave effects. Can’t wait to hear this thing underneath Devin’s feet!

You can find more info on Effects Database here and on Music Radar here, and I’ll keep you posted as soon as I get full info!

Devin Townsend Project To Release Z2 Albums Separately

Devin Townsend Z2

Devin Townsend Project’s double album was most definitely one of my musical highlights of 2014 (and cruising from West Hollywood to Anaheim for NAMM while blasting the album in my friend’s car in January was a pretty fun memory too). Both of the discs that make up the album (Sky Blue and Dark Matters) are, of course, spectacular, but listening to them in an isolated context is especially rewarding; they balance each other out in interesting ways but each stands alone in utterly unique ways. And on August 7 each album will be released in its own separate packaging. Read More …

Devin Townsend’s Peavey V On eBay

Devin Townsend PeaveyDevin Townsend’s Peavey V – the one offered up as one of the perks on his Casualties of Cool PledgeMusic drive – is being offered for sale by its new owner. This is Devin’s personal axe, the only production model he owned of his now-discontinued Peavey guitar. On the PledgeMusic drive, Devin said: “This guitar is my personal production model of the signature Peavey DT model that I’ve been playing for 4 years. I only recieved one of the production models, and this is it. Its a very special guitar to me and means a good amout to me. It’s a baritone 7 string Flying V with a mahogany body, and a maple cap. EMG pickups, Sperzel locking tuners and a custom DTP inlay on the 12th fret. It comes in a groovy coffin case and is just a beast of a guitar.” Click here to bid or to see plenty more pics.
