The Return Of The Epiphone Tony Iommi SG

Tony Iommi Epiphone

Aaah this is great news: Epiphone is reviving a version of its Tony Iommi SG. There are a few changes compared to the previous model. According to Epiphone.com: Later this summer, Epiphone will formally announce the new Ltd. Ed. Tony Iommi Signature SG Custom, which will be Tony’s second signature guitar for Epiphone. It features the historic SG profile–now a Tony Iommi trademark–with a Mahogany body finished in beautiful gloss Ebony. The Mahogany neck has a 1960’s SlimTaper™ D- profile and a black graphite nut and the Ebony fingerboard has Pearloid “Cross” inlays with white binding and a Tony Iommi signature on the back of the headstock. It’s available with or without Bigsby and it has Gibson USA pickups. Here’s the press release.  Read More …

REVIEW: Epiphone 1984 Explorer EX

epiphone-1984-explorer-ex

The Gibson Explorer was ahead of its time when it was released in the 50s, and still seemed like a bit a quirky anachronism in the 70s. But in the 80s it found itself at the centre of a revolution in guitar: thrash. This highly technical, highly aggressive new form of music required a guitar that could have plenty of punch, was playable, and looked badass. Certain players took the Explorer and popped a set of EMG pickups in it, and went on to create history. The 1984 Explorer EX pays tribute to the meeting of Explorer and EMG that helped to define the future of heavy music.

Epiphone Ltd. Ed. Slash “Rosso Corsa” Les Paul

Epiphone Slash Rosso Corsa Les PaulOne of my favourite Gibsons of all time is a quite recent one: the Slash Rosso Corsa model. Something about that deep red with the zebra Seymour Duncan pickups just really gets to me. I know I’m not alone: I’m told by various folks that the Gibson models sold quite quickly indeed. Now Slash has teamed up with Epiphone to offer a more affordable version of the guitar: the Epiphone Ltd. Ed. Slash “Rosso Corsa” Les Paul. It’s at the high end of Epiphone gear in terms of price and appointments, which I think is cool because if they’d instead gone with a Les Paul Special or something you wouldn’t get the full pop of a carved top or that classic balance between trapezoid inlays and Tune-O-Matic/tailpiece (ever notice how they both lead your eye towards the neck pickup and pickup switch? I love design touches like that). There’s a video below, followed by the press release. Read More …
