REVIEW: The Aristocrats’ Culture Clash Live! & Tres Caballeros

It’s been intriguing to watch The Aristocrats (Guthrie Govan, Bryan Beller and Marco Minnemann) grow. I was lucky enough to be at their very first performance, before they even had a band name or Aristocrats-specific material. And since then they’ve played countless gigs (actually Bryan Beller could probably name them all – he seems great at stuff like that) and inspired musicians all over the world to push their abilities to new levels. And I guess that’s the big caveat for The Aristocrats: it’s pretty much ‘musician music.’ I know of one or two non-musicians who listen to them but for the most part this is a band that seems best appreciated by those who are trained to take in the nuances of what The Aristocrats are putting out there. This year there have been two new Aristocrats releases, the live album Culture Clash Live! and the new studio record, Tres CaballerosRead More …

PRESS RELEASE: Fresh off their wildly successful 2013-2014 Culture Clash world tour, The Aristocrats – by any measure the hottest new band in instrumental rock/fusion today – rewrote their own rules for their third studio album, Tres Caballeros, which is slated for release in late June.
After two fairly raw trio albums, guitarist Guthrie Govan (Steven Wilson, Asia/GPS), bassist Bryan Beller (Joe Satriani, Dethklok) and drummer Marco Minnemann (Steven Wilson, Joe Satriani) set up camp at legendary Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood, CA, where Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Van Halen all recorded landmark albums.

INTERVIEW: Guthrie Govan

guthrie govanGuthrie Govan is The Dude from The Big Lebowski. No, not in terms of looks or personality or loyalty to a particular rug, but in the sense that sometimes there’s a man, well, he’s the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that’s Guthrie Govan. His style brings together incredible technique and tone but most importantly it’s packed with personality and vision. To hear Guthrie play is to hear someone who’s playing with music, rather than playing at music, whether in his trio The Aristocrats with Bryan Beller and Marco Minnemann, or in Steven Wilson’s solo band, or playing his own material. With Guthrie heading to Australia soon for a series of masterclasses for Thump Music as well as an appearance at the Adelaide International Guitar Festival, it seemed like high time to talk shop with the dude.  Read More …

NAMM: Charvel Booth Visit

IMG_2397One of my favourite things about NAMM this year was that Charvel was up in the Fender room, where it belongs, instead of downstairs tucked away into a weird little area that was hard to see until you were inside it like last year. This meant it was much easier to see beautiful new instruments like the Guthrie Govan, Joe Duplantier and Jake E Lee signature models as well as plenty of beautiful Charvel Custom Shop creations and of course the San Dimas Style 1 that will never, ever stop being awesome. Join us as we take a peek, won’t you? Read More …

BetH6nJCEAAnf_BPRESS RELEASE: Charvel is proud to announce three new signature models, the JEL Signature Pearl White model, Guthrie Govan Signature models and Joe Duplantier Signature San Dimas Style 2. For decades now, the most requested Charvel guitar ever is a Jake E. Lee signature model based on the distinctive white “Charvel-ized” instrument the great guitarist has played ever since he bought it new back in 1975. With this special guitar, from his first notable successes in the early 1980s through an acclaimed career that continues today with Red Dragon Cartel, Lee remains an admired and influential musician’s musician. Take A Tour Of Guthrie Govan’s Pedalboard

GuthrieGuitarist – the excellent UK magazine that you really should subscribe to if you’re not already – has just posted a great pedalboard walk-through with Guthrie Govan, which you can watch below. This is Part 1 of a 3-part video. Guthrie’s using his Charvel guitar – which he says is close to becoming a production model – and his new Victory Amplification V100 Duke amp. Guitarist says “Stay tuned for a full demo of the Victory V100 from Guthrie and an in-depth look at the retro-style Floyd Rose vibrato on his new Charvel.” Issue 374 of Guitarist magazine features a  Guthrie Govan cover feature in which he talks about his future plans with Charvel, technique and new musical horizons. It’s out in print and digital forms from 18 October 2013. In the meantime, here’s the pedalboard walk-through: Read More …

victoryWe had a little peek at them the other day, but Victory Amplification has officially launched now, so there’s plenty of new info to drool over.
