Ormsby HypeGTR & SXGTR Production Models

If you haven’t checked out the incredible guitars being made by Perry Ormsby, where the hell have you been? Every Ormsby guitar I’ve played has been utterly flawless in its construction and tone. His Hypemachine and SX models are world-class instruments and if you’ve never played a multiscale instrument before and are a bit skeptical about the idea, these will quickly win you over. Of course, getting in on a Hypemachine run is pretty tricky and an Ormsby Customshop instrument is a pretty pricey endeavour, so Perry has announced the GTR Production Models which are still very high quality but more affordable and with solid finishes. Available in six and seven-string HypeGTR and SXGTR models, the specs were nutted out by an invited group of Ormsby fans online and the initial run of 175 guitars was presold in 19 hours. This first run is being increased to 250 total. Read More …

Schecter Blackjack Collection Shipping Now

blackjackOne of the coolest product lines of 2014 has gotta be the Schecter Blackjack Collection, which is shipping now. Schecter has taken almost a custom shop approach to these instruments: on the surface they appear to be pretty stripped-back, but when you look closer all of the guitars have Crimson Red binding and inlays, combined with Glow-In-Dark Side markers and passive Seymour Duncan pickups. The Avenger and C models each have five variations 6-string with HipShot USA fixed bridge, Floyd Rose or Floyd Rose with Sustainiac, plus fixed-bridge 7 and 8-string models. And there’s also a 6-string Tempest, a very cool Schecter design that I’m glad to see back in the line. FEATURE: 8 Is Enough… for now – Production 8-string guitars

The 8 string electric guitar isn’t a totally new phenomenon – Meshuggah fans have been lusting after their own readily available version for years now – but since Ibanez made the brave move into the mass-produced world of the low F# string, other companies have stepped up with their own monstrous creations. Here are a few readily available production 8 strings. All feature EMG 808 active pickups, and all are tuned F#-B-E-A-D-G-B-E at the factory, but of course you’re free to come up with your own tunings. Personally, I’d probably drop the F# down to E. You’ve already gone down that far, why not get all the way down to bass territory? Then again, following that philosophy, I’d probably want a 9 string so I can go as low as a 5 string bass… Hehehe.
