Introducing IK Multimedia iRig Pads

irig_pads

I know that for me one of my biggest challenges when making music at home on the computer is trying to get my drum tracks to sound lifelike. I hate that overly mechanical, ultra-quantised, every-hit-sounds-the-same MIDI drum sound that’s all over the place. I agonise over drawing in my own drum parts one note at a time in the MIDI window. Lately I’ve been using IK Multimedia’s iRig Keys to do it instead, which introduces an extra layer of realism (typically I’ll do one pass for the kick and snare and another for the cymbals). But now IK Multimedia has announced something that will make this process more intuitive and performance-oriented than my awkward keyboard-tapping: iRig Pads! There are jillions of things you can program this thing to do but I know that for me it’s exactly what I want to get more lifelike drum performances onto my tracks. It works with your iOS device or computer. Here’s the press release: Read More …

Mark Holcomb Rocking BIAS And JamUp

Screen_Shot_2014_03_11_at_11.30.42_AMb6acfeCheck out this killer video of Periphery’s Mark Holcomb jamming through some riffs using a custom amp in Positive Grid’s BIAS app and running through several features in JamUp. The song list is “Pale Aura,” an untitled demo which may or may not be used for Periphery, and “Immaterial.” “Since I keep my Fractal AxeFx-II racked up in our touring rig when we’re at home, my home jamming rig has been condensed to just an iPad and a powered cab,” Mark says. “Not only are the tones as good as any other piece of gear I own but the portability of having both Positive Grid apps on iOS makes it ideal for travel.”

Steve Vai Releases Vai360° iOS App

vaiSteve Vai and Mativision have just released Vai360°, an interactive iOS app which lets you stand onstage with Steve and band to experience a live concert happening all around you. Captured at a recent Vai show at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, the app gives you access to six different cameras which you can virtually rotate (either manually or using your device’s gyro feature), or you can put the app in Auto mode to call the shots for you. There’s also a tour of Vai’s Harmony Hut studio where you can covet his guitars and amps in 360 degrees while he talks you through what’s what. I’ve been messing around with the app this morning and it’s really cool. Man, Vai uses every centimetre of that stage, doesn’t he! Check out the video below and read the press release. Then go get it in the app store! Read More …
