Marshall CSJTM 145 1964 Andertons 50th Anniversary

42728-csjtm-64-staright-frontWanna see something cool? The Marshall Custom Shop CS JTM145 50th Anniversary Andertons Valve Head was designed in collaboration with Lee Anderton to celebrate Andertons Music Company’s 50th birthday. Built by the Marshall Custom Shop in Milton Keynes, UK, and available exclusively from Andertons Music (one of the oldest Marshall dealers in the world!) in a limited edition of 200, it features a commemorative plate with Andertons 50th Anniversary logo and a matching custom amp cover. And it’s the first time Marshall has ever made an anniversary amp for a retailer like this. What’s that? You want to hera what it would sound like if Joe Bonamassa played Bernie Marsden’s original 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard through one? Alright.

The Fender Stratocaster Turns 60

0867604ad5df412ea4ecf0b611742200.jpgOn one hand, it feels like the Fender Stratocaster has always been there. On the other, there are still folks who quite clearly remember when these beautiful instruments were first released. Fact is, the Stratocaster has been around for 60 years as of 2014, and it’s a testament to the perfection of Leo Fender and co’s initial vision that you can still buy new Stratocasters right now that are very much like those first Strats. Even though the design has been refined and elaborated upon in the intervening six decades (and I defy anyone to play an American Deluxe Stratocaster and not be blow away by the quality and playability), those developments have never made the original 1954 Stratocaster blueprint obsolete. And so in 2014, Fender will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Stratocaster with six models celebrating the guitar’s past, present and future (including Strats with iOS connectivity!). You can read about them here. In the meantime, below is a great piece from Fender about the Stratocaster. And if you use Twitter, Instagram, Vine or Facebook, use the hashtag #STRAT60 to show how you’ve helped shape the past 60 years of music with your Fender Stratocaster.

Schecter Unveils Jinxx Signature Model

1544489_788880001128813_1523362957_nThey’ve been teasing it for a little while but Schecter has now unveiled The Recluse, a new signature model for Jinxx of Black Veil Brides. Schecter is kicking all sorts of goals with their 2014 line-up – more on that shortly – and this model looks quite cool indeed. It has a mahogany gloss black body with dark red binding and is loaded with active EMG 81/85 pick-ups, ebony fret-board on a three-piece mahogany neck which is crowned with the Devil 3×3 headstock. I like its slight mix of SG and utter evil. Keep an eye on Schecter’s website for more info on the 2014 line-up. And if you’re here in Australia you can catch Black Veil Brides at the Soundwave festival. Read More …

Fender Custom Shop 2014 Custom Collection

f78965d2fff941ed87683e54f4e01168Are there any five sweeter words than ‘New Fender Custom Shop Stuff’? The Custom Shop is always exploring different ideas of what a Fender can be while still paying tribute to the history of Fender instruments. The Custom Shop is great at making vintage reproductions, of course, but some of the really fun stuff happens when they start to tweak the finer points of the design, and then you sometimes see features filtering their way right on through the Fender line. The 2014 Custom Collection offers a bit of both: there are vintage-themed beauties such as the 1964 Closet Classic Jazzmaster as well as more modern takes like the 2014 Proto Stratocaster. Here’s the press release. Read More …

Why I Love My Acoustic Guitar

rsz_peter_hodgson_acoustic_photoI was recently asked to participate in a cool article for Musician’s Friend’s The Hub. I was asked about my acoustic guitar, and until I can afford a nice Taylor my main acoustic is an Ibanez Charleston acoustic that I’ve had for nearly 15 years. I’ll leave it to the article to tell you about the guitar, but this is a pretty unusual model for Ibanez that you don’t see very often. Mine needs a new bridge saddle (it was a victim of one of my early experiments in acoustic guitar setup – hey, better to practice on my own guitar than a customers’, right?) but otherwise it’s quite a nice guitar with an unusual tone: soft and sweet, not particularly loud but very musical.

Dario Lorina Joins Black Label Society

Screen Shot 2014-01-02 at 1.45.25 PMRemember those ‘Dario Lorina is Ozzy’s new guitarist!’ rumours that were swirling around a few years ago? That didn’t pan out (the gig went to Gus G and it was never clear if it was just rumour or wishful thinking from some Dario fans) but in a new and wonderful twist, Dario has just been named new guitarist in Black Label Society alongside the mighty Zakk Wylde. This is ultra awesome news: as well as being a member of Lizzy Borden and playing in the late Jani Lane’s band, Dario recently released an incredible solo album via Shrapnel Records which taps into the Shrapnel legacy and shows of his incredible rhythm and lead chops, and it’s going to be awesome to hear what he will do with Black Label Society. He can certainly keep up with Zakk and will be able to bring his own thing into the mix too. Be sure to Grab his solo album from Amazon.com.
